2010 U18 Match ReportsMatch Report - Round 12 Moreland City 1 - 1 Moreland United
This match had been much anticipated as United had beaten City 3:1 in their first encounter of the season.
The day was very cold and rain welcomed the team upon their arrival to Moomba Park Reserve, adding the strong wind and the day made it difficult for attractive football.
Coach De Guara introduced Louis into central defence and his brother Joe as an attacking central midfielder. The move paid off as both boys were to play well on the day.
The match started off at a very fast pace and both teams attacked quickly down the flanks for the first 5-6 minutes.
United wanted to repeat their earlier triumph but City was having no bar of this. Both teams gave away free kicks, however, no goal resulted. City was having the better possession wish but could not translate this onto the scoreboard.
On the 18 minute mark the referee awarded Stephen a free kick. Joe stepped up but the ball sailed over the bar. Stephen won another free kick on the 20 minute mark. He passed the ball to Mohammad and Mohammad then forced the United keeper into a fine save.
Mohammad, Fabien and Joe were playing well and creating chances with fine displays.
City’s defence led well by Mat Papas was doing a fine job. United’s free kick on the 22 minute mark was also sent well over the bar. A corner followed to United but City’s defence was not going to get beaten and Daniel cleared the ball comfortably. Anthony and Louis were also doing a sterling job in their respective roles.
Jason was dangerous on the left wing and nearly created a few openings to shoot on goal. The match continued to be played at a frantic pace as both teams were after a win. The referee then produced a yellow card to Joe on the 28 minute mark. Up to this point in time, City were ahead slightly in possession but from this point until the half time interval, it clearly was on top of United. However, United did create a great chance on the 40 minute mark and the kick forced Sam to make a great save. City then took the ball down the left wing and won a throw in. Stephen took possession and then went past two United players and went straight for goal. His shot unfortunately went wide.
The score was Nil all at the half time mark.
The second half started in the same vain as the first, fast end to end stuff. The temperature must have dropped a few percentage points as all the spectators were freezing.
Coach De Guara introduced Matt Matte and Christian for Mohammad and Fabien respectively. United’s coach also introduced a couple of speedy wingers into the mix with clear instructions to run behind City’s defence and lay cross balls into the box for their strikers. This caused City quite a few headaches but our defence stood firm. Jason continued his good play into the second half and Daniel was supporting him with good ball supply.
Matt Matte was playing well and Christian also became useful in the midfield role.
United smashed a ball into the cross bar from a corner kick on the 16 minute mark and then Sam was called upon to make a fine save on the 20 minute mark.
Jason was causing a bit of havoc on the left but luck alluded City because their fine play deserved a goal.
City’s luck was about to change. Louis won a free kick on the 25 minute mark on the right. Stephen stepped up and measured a sweet pass to Matt Matte’s feet. Matt then turned the ball with a first time touch into the corner of the net. It was a great goal and City were one up.
United became even more desperate and fought hard to equalise. To their credit, the boys continued to fight for every ball against a very well organised and determined United team.
Sam made another fine save on the 30 minute mark but could not stop another shot on the 40 minute mark.
The one all score remained until the final whistle.
City had got the draw and perhaps deserved a little more against a very good United team.
Keep playing well boys and remember that solid teamwork is the way to go.
Match Report - Round 7 Moreland City 1 - 0 Bacchus Marsh
The boys did not have to travel for a crazy 9am kick off this week thank heavens!
Notwithstanding that Bacchus Marsh had not won a match and had been taking in huge scores, we were impressed that the bulk of their team arrived for the game an hour and half early. This is good sign that your opponents are well motivated.
It turned out to be just that. Bacchus March introduced a new rangy keeper that played well by positioning himself in the right places and whether it was luck or otherwise, he stopped many of Moreland’s shots. However, most of the shots were straight at him and he really did not have to make any difficult saves.
Coach De Guara introduced Stephen on the right wing and he, Jason, Josh, Matthew Matte and Christian were causing Bacchus Marsh a lot of headaches with the many chances created. Jason took a corner around the 8 minute mark and Stephen hit the cross bar. From another Jason corner, Stephen headed high.
Then Matthew Matte and Josh had clear chances, but their shots went straight to the Keeper. Moreland kept attacking and creating chances, and on several occasions Stephen beat the defence and laid some excellent square balls into the box only for the defence to clear. The major problem was that all the strikers and midfield did not support such moves. In other words, Moreland did not have sufficient bodies in the box either to lay pressure and to take these chances on goal.
Sam did not have much to do as it was all Moreland but it did not have any goals to show for all their effort.
Around the 28 minute mark Moreland won a free kick just outside the penalty area. Pappas took the kick and he placed it perfectly in the top corner. 1 Nil to Moreland.
Coach De Guara introduced Zenon for Jason on the ring wing at half time and moved Stephen to the left wing. Josh came off for Mohammad in an attacking midfield role.
Our boys continued to press but had no luck as their moves were not flued enough. Pappas was playing very well and he was well supported by Daniel and Dion.
Chris was supporting the attack well and Stephen laid several good balls into the box which unfortunately weren’t able to be converted. Stephen also had a clear run at the goal, only to be stopped by a kick to his ankle by a defender. No penalty resulted.
There appeared to be some problem with Christian’s tackling and he came off after a discussion with Coach De Guara. Moreland were down to 10 players.
No substitution was possible as we had ran out of subs. A few minutes later, Matthew Matte was injured and we were down to 9 players. Luckily Moreland hung on for a hard earned 1 Nil win.
The boys now face Essendon Royals away next Sunday. We anticipate a very hard match as the results to date show that the Royals will clearly be a tough opponent. The boys really need to focus for this one! Anything is possible if you really want it bad enough!
Math Report - Round 6 Moreland City 1 - 6 Ballarat
The boys had to travel to Ballarat for a crazy 9 a.m. kick off. Where is the fairness in that?
Coach De Guara had to ask for help from two new boys Louis and Ozran as we appear to have lost Jordan and Lou for various reasons.
Ozran played at right back and Louis was introduced into the attack. The travel and early kick off was clearly affecting our boys as they appeared a little sluggish.
Ballarat started strongly and their blond right winger and an attacking midfielder ( no 7) were causing us a lot of trouble. Our boys then strung several good forward thrusts and from one of these, Jason struck a great shot in the top right corner on around the 20 minute mark. Moreland were one up.
Sam was doing a sterling job as usual in goal and saved us on several occasions. Ballarat continued to attack and create chances. Our boys were giving away possession of the ball to easily and this placed our defence under constant pressure. Our defenders also caused problems because a lot of the time they just bombed the ball away to the opposition.
Ballarat’s left winger cut a square pass into the penalty area and one of their strikers tapped in the ball to square things up at one all. I prayed that the score would remain that until half time. It wasn’t meant to be.
Our boys continued to give up possession and from another attack from the left wing a kick at goal was turned into our net for and own goal. Another own goal followed a minutes after and the boys were 3-1 down. In got worse because Sam was forced off his goal area to stop a Ballarat striker, who passed to a team mate and he tapped in for their 4th goal. The score was 4-1 to Ballarat at half time.
Ballarat are a good team and were playing very well at home at the crazy time of 9am, however, our boys did not deserve to be 4-1 down.
Coach De Guara made a few substitutions at half time as a few boys were feeling the effects of a hard game. Christian and Matt came on and were lively.
Both teams created several chances, however no goals resulted.
All our boys lifted in the second half and our strikers were busy but several other attempts on goal proved unsuccessful. Sam saved a certain goal when a Ballarat striker was clear with only Sam to beat. Great save Sam!
Unfortunately, Moreland’s passing let it down time and time again. On several occasions where Moreland did string 6-8 passes, they looked like the team we all wish they become.
Moreland kept playing their normal game and kept pressing, however, they had no reward for their work. Ballarat scored their 5th goal from a turnover and it looked it would be the final score. However, the referee had a different view when he awarded Ballarat a very dubious penalty which they converted.
The final score of 6-1 to Ballarat was not a true reflection of the game. Yes, Ballarat were clearly the better team on the day, but a final score of 3-1 would have been a fairer outcome.
The boys now face Bacchus Marsh next Sunday at home and want their second win on their home ground.
Match Report - Round 5 Moreland City 3 - 2 Werribee City
The boys played very well and were 3 nil up but Werribee City were given a couple of free kicks just outside the penalty area which they converted with two good strikes. The final result was 3-2 to Moreland.
It was the boys first home win of the season and they celebrated in the usual manner.
Match Report – Round 4 Moreland City 4 - 1 Brunswick City
The boys traveled to Brunswick City’s ground hoping to put the disappointment of the previous week’s loss behind them.
Coach De Guara moved Chris to central defence in a great tactical switch as he repelled several forwards thrusts by Brunswick City. Chris was backed up well by fellow defenders Pappas, Daniel and Dion with Pappas exceptional in his sweeping role. Both teams created several chances, however Lou was lively and the signs were there that he was due for a great display. After a few unsuccessful attempts on goal, Lou dribbled his was through and shot powerfully for our first goal on the 12 minute mark. All our strikers were busy but several other attempts on goal proved unsuccessful, before Stephen laid a pass to Lou, who passed it on to Jason, who then carried it down the left wing to place a wonderful square ball into the penalty box where Mohamed timed his run to perfection for a simple tap in. 2-nil to Moreland.
Moreland was now playing very well and were creating chance after chance. Mohamed scored his second (and Moreland's third) goal after converting a Zenon corner kick.
Moreland kept pressing and Lou was proving a big headache for the Brunswick defence. He went on another run and dribbled past three Brunswick players before beating the Brunswick keeper with an unstoppable shot. 4-nil to Moreland.
Cruising at 4-0, Coach De Guara made three substitutions at half time but something happened after the half time break as Brunswick came out with a restructured team and a 'nothing to lose' attitude. They created numerous open-play chances which keeper Sam did well to keep out, as well as hitting the upright from a free kick. Moreland started to wrestle back some attacking momentum with Lou's shot just going wide, while Christian also had a very good chance.
Moreland's defence was finally beaten in the 65th minute as Brunswick scored a goal from close range. Brunswick kept up their attack for the rest of the half but to Moreland's credit, they were able to hold on for a 4-1 win.
The boys will be out to secure their first home win of the season when they take on Werribee City next Sunday.
Match Report – Round 3 Moreland City 1 - 3 Moreland United
First Half
The match started at a frantic pace With City's defence was under a lot of pressure. The United boys were pumped up having lost their first 2 games of the season and were keen to do well in the local derby.
City's central defender Jordan was also missing from the starting line up which helped the United strikers - who were on their game.
City had a free kick on the 15 minute mark which Lou kicked straight to the keeper. The United boys were creating many chances and City had to use the offside trap on many occasions to stop them. Jason created some good movement on the 18 minute mark but nothing came from it.
On the 20 minute mark City had a scare when United were clear on goal but City's trusty keeper Sam pulled off a great save. On the 22 minute mark City striker Mathew was injured in a heavy tackle and took no further part in the Match. Jordan came on in Mathew’s place.
On the 32 minute mark, Sam pulled off another good save but could do nothing to prevent United's opening goal when they beat the offside trap to score a fine goal. The half time score was 1-Nil to United.
Second Half
Coach De Guara made a few changes at half time to freshen up things up, which paid dividends in the 60th minute when Josh ran onto a good through ball from Stephen to rifle home a good strike and equalize for Moreland City.
The boys started to lose their way through some over-use of the ball and it was a City error which led to a turnover, and subsequent long ball to a United striker who made no mistake to make it 2-1 to United.
The game was as good as done moments later when United scored their third following the combination of some good United midfield pressure and loose City marking.
Match Report – Round 2 Moreland City 3 - 0 Brimbank Stallions FC
Moreland City U18s travelled to Sunshine on Anzac Day to play Brimbank Stallions FC.
It was a very cold and windy day. Luckily Moreland won the toss and decided to use the strong wind to its advantage. Also, the boys were pretty determined to put in a good performance considering last week’s loss to Altona City.
Our captain Josh, Lou and Matthew were causing the Brimbank defence a lot of headaches. Our defence were holding up well, where Jordan and Pappas were in control and were also supported well by Daniel and Anthony. Our midfield boys were under pressure but were also doing a fair job. On a few occasions, Brimbank did penetrate our defence with some fine play and it was our fine keeper Sam that saved the day and stopped two certain goals with brilliant saves.
Our forward pressure resulted in numerous corners and Josh converted on two occasions due to his fine efforts. Around the half hour mark, some fine individual play by Matthew resulted in him scoring a fine goal.
The half time score was 3-0 to Moreland.
Brimbank’s coach must have given his boys a strong talk at the break because they came out extremely determined to get something from the game. Luckily the wind had died down, it rained heavily and Moreland were able to withstand their consistent pressure. The referee was having a fine game too and had to pull up a few Brimbank players before handing out a few yellow cards as well. Josh received a free kick a few metres outside the penalty area. Stephen then curved a fine kick from about 25 metres just over the cross bar.
Our keeper Sam was called again to pull off another few fine saves. Both teams tired a little towards the end and the score finished 3-0 to Moreland.
A fine effort boys, however, there is much to do to keep improving. Keep up the hard work and the results should follow.
Match Report – Round 1 Moreland City 0 - 2 Altona City
A relatively new Moreland U18 team kicked off their season against Altona City on a very hot Sunday afternoon on 18 April.
The team started slowly and appeared hesitate and out of sorts with very little talking. This may be due to the many new faces in the team.
The Altona City team came determined and wanted the ball much more than Moreland. The Moreland boys appeared nervous and this gave the Altona team confidence which translated into two very good chances on goal. One was saved by a great interception by Moreland’s keeper Sam and the other hit the upright. Moreland also created several good chances but could not convert.
The teams went into the half time break on even terms - Nil all.
Moreland played much better in the second half and created at least five very good chances and were very unlucky not to score. There was talk that a penalty should have been awarded to Moreland and the writer agrees that it was deserved and Josh, our captain also hit the upright.
These missed opportunities came back to hurt Moreland with Altona capatalising on some turnovers to bury two chances and effectively seal the game.
Moreland continued to press but to no avail as the final result ended in a 2-nil loss. The team now has to regroup and work hard to keep improving on all fronts.
